Barbour-ous conduct

As a Southern white man, I'm just too thoroughly disgusted by this loathsome crap to even offer a comment.

From the article:

Some denounce the Confederate battle symbol as a reminder of slavery and segregation, while others cherish it as an emblem of Southern history and heritage.

I'm not a Southerner, although I did grow up in Jacksonville, FL. My question is, is there a difference between these two things in this case?

Look, I'm not really buying into the stereotype of the Southern racist. I assume that most people in the South would like to get past these kinds of stupid, petty racial issues. I know that race-baiting and bigotry is not unique in the South. So why does it continue to flourish there?
