Voting and free speech

I've avoided discussing the controversy surrounding Diebold Election Systems and their electronic voting equipment in the past because I just don't know enough about the underlying technical issues to judge the validity of the claims being made against it. But now that the company has apparently decided to use bully-boy tactics to try to silence its critics, I guess I'll have to start boning up on the subject.
